After a couple days of being sore from surgery and a little tired from chemo, Lyla had a good week chilling out with family and playing with friends at Faye's. She got a great package from Ryan and Emily full of coloring stuff, stickers and a great drawing of a seahorse from Uncle Ryan.
Lyla's loving Grandpa and Grandma as much as ever. She has decided that Grandpa is her prince and Daddy is the Grand Prince. She's got them both around her little fingers. But that's ok -- they love spoiling her.
Lyla's newest scar is healing up nicely. It looks really good and we're continuing to put a little bacitracin on it in the morning and before bed. It seems to be a lot skinnier than her other scars, but since they've both been cut through a second time, I guess I can't really compare. The scar just below this one it from her first port. It's actually healed quite a lot over the last two years!
We went to the pulmonologist on Tuesday. Lyla was due for a follow up and I also wanted to talk with her before getting too far into chemotherapy. She said Lyla is sounding great right now and that she should continue to take her inhalers in the morning and evening. Since the chemo will most likely make Lyla's blood counts drop drastically, she will be very susceptible to infection this cold and flu season. After last season when she wasn't immuno-suppressed and got pneumonia, i'm very worried about what this season will hold.
Dr. Mikesell said Lyla should get the PCV23 vaccine for pneumonia and definitely a flu shot. She also recommended working with the oncology team to get Lyla approved for Synagis shots. While the shots are usually only given to infants to prevent RSV, Dr. Mikesell said that because of Lyla's immuno-suppression and history we might be able to get Cigna to approve them. She suggested starting that process now because it might take a while to get insurance to approve the shots and there's no way we can afford them without it. Hopefully we can work it out since RSV is a real risk for Lyla.
In addition to the shots, she said I should work with the respiratory vendor to learn what equipment can be steamed and sterilized and how often it's safe to do it. She said I should stick with soap and water every day and then bleach weekly since the bacteria/viruses wouldn't grow any faster than that. Looking forward to extra chores!
And of course, it was my birthday yesterday! Lyla made me this lovely cake with Grandma and Grandpa while I had a night with my work friends. It's so cute and makes me very excited for our upcoming trip -- only a month to Give Kids the World!!
