She's kind of a big deal!

Tuesday at her all school meeting Lyla was awarded CARES Student of the Month! Each month students are chosen for the honor based on one of the school's "cares" (cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control).

This month was assertion month, in which they largely talk about anti-bullying and including others. While Lyla doesn't usually have trouble speaking her mind,  standing up for herself with other kids can be a challenge, especially in situations like recess where she is often the one left out or left behind because of her physical impairments. I was especially proud of her when I read this description:

0. A- Assertion: Assertion is the ability to stand up for one’s own ideas without hurting others and without negating others.
   

 And what exemplifies assertion at recess: 

0. ASSERTION

• Gentle reminders to others who are needing it

• Tell an adult if you or someone else feels scared, hurt or threatened

• Let others know if you would like to join a game or activity

  SO proud of our awesome girl! She got her Picture on the school site and got to wear a cape around school for the whole day. She was already jazzed because it was pajama day, they had her favorite lunch, and she didn't have to wear her orthotics. What a great way to end the semester. First grade rocks!
